Pandemic Passions

Discover how you can pursue your passion amidst the never-ending JOs!

Going to the office. Going to the mall for lunch. Drinking with officemates after work. Drinking with officemates at work. These are just some of the things that we’ve stopped doing because of the pandemic. But if there’s one thing that it hasn’t stopped us from doing, it’s pursuing our passions. And it should not stop us. Being stuck from home shouldn’t keep us from doing what we love (aside from work because we assume that you love it).

But with all the zoom-meetings-that-could-have-been-emails, presentations-that-extend-until-lunch-time, and internals-where-everyone-has-to-comment that fill up our calendar like a Tetris screen, how can one pursue a passion? Oh it’s possible. And these 4 peeps from Tribal are living, heavily-breathing proof.

What’s your side passion?

My passion? It’s definitely illustrating. TBH, I wasn’t really good at drawing or anything. I never even bothered to fix it! But when I realized in 2018 that I wanted to sell merch, that’s when I started to hone my craft. Fangirling over BTS also helped because I’ve always wanted to make some sort of homage to their lyrics.

How do you pursue it during the pandemic and how does it help you?

Never actually thought of it that way. Illustrating is just something that I like so much, and I just really want to share and sell the things that I love (clue: yes, it’s BTS). Illustrating and creating merch have also helped me with work a lot. They take me to a different world where I can just freely design whatever I want.

What’s your side passion?

I was 9 when I fell in love with singing and writing. Fast forward to 14 years later, I formed a band, A for A, with my friends. We’re somewhere along alternative and synth pop and we’re just a group of people who gets excited pretty much about anything related to creating music and sharing them with people.

How do you pursue it during the pandemic and how does it help you?

We know that without the live gigs, we need to hustle more so we decided to live closer to each other and create a home studio. This pandemic, music and my bandmates have become my safe circle and outlet when I’m not in the right headspace. Also, thanks to them, they help me feel more confident about expressing my ideas at work and discover more creative pieces.

How do you pursue it during the pandemic and how does it help you?

This serves as a creative exercise for me outside work! I usually spend all my weekends and holidays conceptualizing, producing, and shooting content for the studio. These are mostly my personal food hacks or recipes which I somehow developed throughout years of playing with food and camera at the same time.

What’s your side passion?

Miles Asks Again, my podcast, would probably be the baby of thing I enjoy: being an armchair philosopher/psychologist (a know-it-all), singing, and playing around with audio editing. It started as a cringy voice note on my phone and figured it might be therapeutic to just throw it out to the world.

How do you pursue it during the pandemic, and how does it help you?

It felt self-serving to talk alone, so I eventually asked friends to share the less glamorous side of their experiences. I figured maybe others could pull strength from them the way I did during lockdown. I haven’t uploaded in a while, but I still have lots of interviews, so watch out!

Tune in to Miles Asks Again and get inspiration from Miles’ podcasts!
